Weekly meet: September 25th, 2012

Tonight is all about working on projects! If you have a project you’d like to work on in the company of others, bring it on down. We have tools, knowhow, and lots of people who would love to participate.

What’s going on September 25th at Gainesville Hackerspace:

  • Lots of hanging out and working on projects! Here’s a partial list of what people will be working on:
    • A field trip to the old space to work on the decorative cargo pallet room dividers (Effie and hopefully lots of other people)
    • A Twitter social experiment project (Amir, cvk, Justin K., Preston)
    • RaspberryPi hacking
    • … much, much more!
  • The new RFID cards are finally here. If you’re a member, come pick up your new card and start enjoying 24-hour access to the space!

Tuesday nights are open to all. Doors open at 7pm. Please bring a project to work on!

This meeting will be held at our new location, 101 SE 2nd Pl, Ste 100, Gainesville, FL 32601. (We are located in the basement level of the Sun Center, in the former location of the club Wise Guys. Our entrance is on the south side of the building, near the large arch at the north end of the main parking lot, beneath the large green awning.)

Patty’s glow-in-the-dark worms

Patty from the Cade Museum showed us how to make our own glow-in-the-dark worms at Demo Night on September 18th.

They looked really cool under UV light!

Devin’s sous-vide steak

This is some if the steak that Devin cooked in his homemade sous vide machine at Demo Night on September 18th.

After the steak came out of the water bath, Devin caramelized the surface with a blowtorch to make it look and taste awesome.

Thanks to the internet access team and Colin and Nate from Grooveshark we now have awesome internet access at the downtown space! This is achieved via a wireless point-to-point bridge to Grooveshark’s building which carries our traffic through their network to the internet.

We are super grateful to Grooveshark for sponsoring our internets!

Also thanks to the internet access team! You guys climbed ladders, crawled through ducts, and did other hard stuff for the freedom of our bits.

We almost have internet access at the downtown space!

Frank, Manuel, Ian, Charles, and Colin and Nate from Grooveshark did a TON of work tonight to set up a wireless bridge from Grooveshark’s office to our building, and the only remaining step is to run a connection downstairs from the Grooveshark cafe (which is also getting hooked up) to Hackerspace.

If all goes according to plan, we will probably have good internet access by sometime tomorrow evening!

For those who haven’t heard, Grooveshark is donating an awesome internet connection to Hackerspace! We are super lucky to know those guys.
